The aim is simply to allow the hand to move with and during the actual time of the music. ... Whilst these pieces do not attempt to describe the music, they follow an exploration of its influence... ... The drawings become sculptures through an exact process of measurement, beginning by forging a length of steel, changing its thickness and shape. This length is finally bent using the torch. Simon's current work follows three directions - sculpture for site-specific commissions, the head and portrait, and work that originates through the consideration of particular pieces of music. He models in clay for casting into metal, stone for carving, and steel for forging. In his Piano Music Series, the emphasis is on drawing within the real time of the music, creating a calligraphic form that results in forged steel and stone sculptures. Simon has taught in many schools, colleges and community venues and runs regular sculpture workshops in portrait modelling, stone carving and life drawing. These take place both in London and from his barn near Abergavenny in the Brecon Beacons National Park in Monmouthshire, Wales. Simon was educated through a traditional 4-year apprenticeship with the sculptors Edwin Russell, Lorne McKean and Bernard Saunders, followed by an honours degree in Sculpture at Central St Martin's School of Art and Design. He has work in both private and public collections in the UK, Europe and North America, and has worked extensively as a sculptor in film, television and theatre.
