Workshop Raku - Ceramics - Andalucia - Spain (#262)
What is Raku firing?
Raku is a traditional Japanese firing technique that is closely associated with the Japanese tea ceremony. After an object has been bisque-fired, it is glazed with material specially suited to raku firing. After the glaze has been applied, the piece is heated in a gas oven to almost 1000ºC for a period of 20 minutes. The red-hot object is then removed from the oven using tongues and is buried under a mix of sawdust and wood shavings. Due to the rapid cooling and oxygen-deprivation, beautiful colours and crackle effects develop (the ‘ancient’ look of old pottery). These results, that never cease to amaze, are revealed after further cooling in water and brushing the piece clean. Email La Colmena FamosaTell A Friend About This ListingGuestbook
