Silk painting in the tropics - "Tropical Colour in Motion"

Silk is a lustrous and rich, exciting medium with a long history linked with the development of civilisation. Traditionally, it was traded across Asia and Europe (the Silk Road), at times, reputedly being worth its weight in gold!

Textile artist and painter, Jill Booth, worked as an art teacher in various parts of Australia and overseas before establishing Port Douglas Galleries of Fine Art (now closed) and continuing her involvement with students and her own art practice.

Because she strongly believes that textile painting needs to employ all the design principles that apply to other forms of artwork, this workshop will take an unconventional approach.

'Tropical Colour in Motion'

'Tropical Colour in Motion' will help students to become aware of design principles and the use of colour as applied to the painting of different sizes of scarves in a loose and relaxed way that encourages creativity and experimentation.
Each student will complete the painting of four scarves and will understand principles of textile painting using fibre-reactive dyes.

In this workshop Jill hopes that students will

1. learn to use basic design principles such as line, movement, repetition, texture, shape and composition through active participation in quick exercises. Properties of silk, dyes and chemicals used will be examined.
2. investigate the use of colour by becoming familiar with terms such as hue, tint, shade, tone, complementary colours, harmony, contrast and saturation and experimenting with their application to their painting.

3. enjoy the process and teamwork as well as the satisfaction of completing four scarves to take home.
