So how could the writing of tropical haikus differ from those written in the traditional home of haikus, Japan?

In essence, haikus ( a short form of poetry with distinct disciplines and rules) have a connection to nature and the changing seasons.

In Tropical Australia changes in the seasons are subtle, in fact barely noticeable. Therefore, those wishing to record their observations through haikus need to be particularly aware of these changes, which often relate to the flowering and fruiting of indigenous plants or the migration of birds as well as patterns of rainfall and prevailing winds.

"Hooked" on haiku

One could say that your instructor, poet and photographer, Frieda van Aller has been "hooked on Haiku" for a long time. Be warned, you may never think of words in quite the same way once you have experienced her workshop!
During the workshop, which will be held in Frieda's walled, courtyard garden, you will learn to appreciate the ancient art of haiku writing, its history and the rules which govern its composition.

You will become aware of subtle differences and signs in tropical seasonal changes and able to record these as a distilled haiku observation.

Being "in the moment" is part of this awareness and focus. If you are a visual or musical artist you may be interested to see how the writing of haikus is helpful in finding the essence and starting point for your latest artwork.

Your tropical haiku writing workshop will help you to develop

1. more awareness of the 'here and now'
2. discipline in your thoughts

3. appreciation of reading and /or writing of haiku

You are invited to be Frieda's guest for lunch in her garden on the day of your workshop.
